STOP MAKING SENSE MAKES A RARE APPEARANCE NOVEMBER 1 AT THE MICHIGAN THEATER

October 8, 2008

Hot on the heels of David Byrne's October 24th live performance at the Michigan Theater comes a rare screening of the acclaimed 1984 Talking Heads documentary, Stop Making Sense. See it at the Michigan Theater on Saturday, November 1 at 7 pm for one show only.

Director Jonathan Demme's award-winning documentary set the creative standard for concert films when it was released. Demme is well known for directing The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, The Manchurian Candidate and many other films as well as videos for Bruce Springsteen, the Pretenders and New Order. Short and sweet at 88 minutes running time, Stop Making Sense was filmed over three nights at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.

Demme claimed that he and the crew were in love with the band and its music - a new twist on the classic director-leading lady stereotype. The result of the affair is visually stunning and David Byrne's performance as lead singer is galvanizing.

"Stop Making Sense is a prime example of the best way to make a perfect concert movie. First, choose as a subject a band that is as attentive to visual matters as it is to its music. Second, choose as director someone with an unerring sense of composition and an ability to zero in on the key moments in a song. Third, plan the shoot to as close to within an inch of its life as possible. Fourth, be in the right place at the right time."

When the film was re-released in 1999 for its 15h anniversary, Salon.com's critic Stephanie Zacharek called it, "one of those miracle movies, a picture that seems to have come together by laws unto itself. It doesn't seem 'made.' It merely exists, like some inexplicable and wonderful quirk of nature: a redwood, a toad with fabulous markings or something that just mysteriously appeared on a lily pad one day."

Admission is $9.00, $7.00 for students, seniors and US veterans, $6.50 for Michigan Theater members. All shows take place at the historic Michigan Theater, 603 E. Liberty Street, across from Borders Books and Music in downtown Ann Arbor
