THE WIZARD OF OZ RETURNS ON NOVEMBER 22, RESTORED AND REMASTERED AT THE MICHIGAN THEATER

October 14, 2008

The Wizard of Oz - that's a kids' film right?  Yes, and so much more. Warner Bros. has restored and remastered the 1939 classic version of Frank Baum's novel to dazzle us again.  See it on Saturday, November 22 at 1:30 pm for one show only at the Michigan Theater.

From the scary but exhilarating flying monkeys to the transcendent score, you'll find something new no matter how often you've seen it as Dorothy and her little dog Toto take a windswept - and involuntary - trip to the magic kingdom of Oz.

Their adventures with three unforgettable companions made cinematic and musical history. Good triumphed over wicked witches. Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley and Bert Lahr headed an amazing cast as remarkable for its diversity as for its talent. The visuals are equally splendid.  The music will live forever.

Remember, it could happen here, even though tornadoes are far less common in Michigan than in Kansas.

Four things you may not know about The Wizard of Oz:
It won two Oscars for best original score and best original song ("Somewhere Over the Rainbow") and was nominated for four others, including Best Picture
Its appeal is global:  Director Victor Fleming was nominated for the Golden Palm at the 1939 Cannes Film Festival
It inspired musical interpretations from Sonny Stitt's bebop "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to the forthcoming LP from Amy Winehouse, or so a British tabloid reported
The lyrics were written by E.Y. Harburg, whose son, Ernie, was on the U-M faculty for many years and part-owner of the Del Rio Bar.

The special screening is sponsored by Borders Books and Music. Our daily film program media sponsors are WEMU 89.1 FM and 107oneFM.

Reserved seats at $15 are available in advance on Ticketweb.com.  General admission is $9.00, $7.00 for students, seniors and US veterans, $6.50 for Michigan Theater members.  All shows take place at the historic Michigan Theater, 603 E. Liberty Street, across from Borders Books and Music in downtown Ann Arbor.
