The Michigan Theater will offer three week-long summer
video camps for youngsters aged 11-17, including a brand
new one, this July and August. Camps will run Monday - Frday
from 9 AM to 3 PM. Enrollment will be limited to 20 campers
each week. Camps will take place at the Michigan Theater
in downtown Ann Arbor.
Instructors will include film and video instructors from the Eastern Michigan University and area high schools. Here are camp details for this season:
LEVEL 1.0: LIGHTS! CAMERA! EDUCATION!
July 20 - 24 or July 27 - 31
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Ages 11-17
No experience required
For the kids who dream of making movies, this is an opportunity to learn the basics of the filmmaking process by collaboratively writing, producing, directing and editing several short films. We will provide digital camcorders and computers with professional editing software. Participants just need to bring creativity and a willingness to collaborate!
By the end of this introductory level workshop, participants will have filmed and edited at least three short films and had the opportunity to script and storyboard their own productions. All editing will be done on Mac computers using the editing software, Final Cut.
LEVEL 2.0: MUSIC VIDEO CAMP
July 27 - 31
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Ages 11-17
Prerequisite: Level 1.0 or some experience required
Participants will build on their filmmaking knowledge and challenge their creativity even further by making music videos. Song is a powerful vehicle for storytelling. In this class, students learn to translate lyrics, melody and movement onto the screen. Participants will edit to music, learn lip-syncing, staging and art direction as they take steps in more experimental directions to create their own music videos.
LEVEL 2.1: HORROR FILM CAMP
August 3 - 7
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM.
Ages 13-17
Prerequisite: Level 2.0 required
Participants will learn to use simple but effective special effects during the production of their own scary movie. All campers will be given the same short screenplay -- creating the horror will be up to them! Techniques covered include: low key lighting, Dutch angle photography, horror make-up, mechanical special effects (like bleeding), simple digital effects and more.
The public is invited, along with all camp participants, to attend the Final Project Screening at the Michigan Theater Saturday, August 22 at 1:00 PM. Participants' films will be shown at a special FREE Film Camp matinee open to the public. This is what every filmmaker dreams of - showing their work on the big screen! Students will also be given a DVD of all their projects to take home.
